3 Keys for Coaching to Think Intentionally

Part 1 of a 3 part series: Understanding the Power of the Thought Process

As a Coach, you focus on your client. You ask them lots of questions and follow-up questions. In the process, many discover that their own biggest barrier has been and is themselves. The next step for the client is to understand their own thinking. After the power of the thought process is understood, it is important to understand proactive, intentional thinking. Then it is a natural, easy move to create an action plan to develop a habit of thinking and speaking based on choice. In this three part series, each step is covered.

Henry Ford said, “If you think you can or if you think you can’t, you are right.” Who said, “You achieve what you believe?” Brian Tracy teaches that you can have any emotion you choose simply by pretending to feel that way. The human brain is an amazing instrument. Consider the possibilities of using more of the power of your brain to get the results you choose.

1. Your brain follows your instructions.

Imagine driving on a dirt road. The more the road is driven, the more the tires of the cars dig ruts. Thoughts and statements have the same impact in your brain – the more you think or say something, the more you have imbedded that in to your brain.

2. Repeating or restating is drilling in the message.

Water flows downhill because it is following the path of least resistance. Over time, rivers change the shape of the landscape (think Grand Canyon.) Humanoids (us), like all of nature, also follow the path of least resistance — which is often negative. It is easy to focus on problems and to criticize ourselves and others. We, like the river, can change the landscape; like the river, it takes time and consistent effort.

3. Changing from a habit of negativity to a habit of positive thinking is possible with time and effort.
Over the next few days, pay attention to your thoughts and words. Consider how it sounds, looks, and feels. The goal is to understand what the impact is for you in your life.
